Metals and Mineral Resources
The Metals, Mineral Resources & Recycling Division aims to create value and expand business by developing upstream investment and trading in metal resources and ferrous materials. In addition, we have made a full-scale entry into the Circular Economy field, including recycling IT assets, rechargeable batteries, and municipal solid waste etc., and are working to create and promote new businesses that respond to society’s needs.
With offices in New York, Houston, Vancouver, Lima, and Rio de Janeiro, we handle a wide variety of mineral resources (iron ore, ferrous materials, ferroalloys, industrial minerals, non-ferrous materials, precious metals, and coal). SCA is also the minority shareholder of Metal One Holdings America, Inc. (MOHA) which, together with Metal One do Brasil and so on, operates steel products business in the Americas region.
Iron Ore and Ferrous Materials
Sojitz handles Brazilian, Peruvian, Venezuelan, American, and Canadian iron ore, as well as ferrous materials (HBI/DRI, DRI Fines). Sojitz is one of pioneers and leaders in importing iron ore from Brazil to Japan. Going forward, Sojitz will expand sales of iron ore to customers in China and other countries with increasing demand. Sojitz is a minority shareholder in Cia. Nipo-Brasileiro de Pelotizacao – NIBRASCO, an iron ore pellet producer.
Ferroalloys
Sojitz has expertise in both trading and investing in the ferroalloy business. In the Americas, Sojitz has equity in the world’s largest ferro-niobium producer, CBMM, in Brazil. While we distribute the products from this business, we also trade other ferroalloys from third parties through the Sojitz global network.
Non-Ferrous Materials, Precious Metals, and Coal
Sojitz handles copper, alumina, and other non-ferrous materials, as well as precious metals such as platinum and palladium. Sojitz also handles Colombian and American coal for our Japanese and Asian customers.
Industrial Minerals
Sojitz business includes various kinds of industrial minerals (Mexican fluorite, American and Brazilian ferrosilicon, American bentonite, Guyanese bauxite, etc.). Sojitz maintains a large share of the Japanese market in each of these product categories. Through Sojitz JECT Corp., a Sojitz group company, we aim to expand sales of a wide variety of carbon products to the U.S. market. In terms of upstream investment, Sojitz has an interest in Black Hills Bentonite mine in the United States.
